How to play Tilt
Every day Tilt puts one thing on the left pan of a scale and a pile of something else on the right. Your job is to guess how many it takes to balance them. How many apples weigh as much as a cat? How many ping pong balls weigh as much as a bowling ball?
A round, step by step
- Read the two objects. The left pan holds one item, the right pan holds the item you will count. A short label such as "adult house cat" or "heaviest legal ball" tells you exactly which version is meant.
- Make your guess. Drag to pile items onto the right pan, or tap the number and type it. The scale stays locked while you guess, so you cannot peek at the beam.
- Weigh it. The scale tips, the real weights appear and you see the exact answer next to your guess.
A daily puzzle has five rounds. Everyone in the world gets the same five rounds on the same day, so you can compare results with friends.
How points work
Each round is worth up to 100 points, so a perfect day is 500. What counts is how many times off you are, not the raw difference. Guessing 50 when the answer is 100 is the same miss as guessing 200: both are off by a factor of two.
| Your guess vs the answer | Points |
|---|---|
| Within 5% | 100 |
| 1.25 times off | 91 |
| 1.5 times off | 82 |
| 2 times off | 68 |
| 4 times off | 34 |
| 8 times off or more | 0 |
Because scoring works in ratios, a near miss on a huge number (say 4,000 instead of 5,000) is worth as much as a near miss on a small one (4 instead of 5).
Ranks
Your daily total gives you a rank: Featherweight (under 140), Lightweight (140), Welterweight (220), Middleweight (300), Heavyweight (380), Champion (450) and Perfect balance (500).
Streaks, past puzzles and bonus rounds
- Streak. Finish the puzzle on consecutive days to grow your streak. It is saved in your own browser, no account needed.
- Past puzzles. Missed a day? Open the calendar to play any earlier puzzle. Past puzzles count toward your stats but not your streak.
- Bonus rounds. After the daily puzzle you can play five free bonus rounds. If you want more, you can choose to watch a short video ad for five extra rounds. It only plays if you tap it.
- Sharing. The share button copies a spoiler-free grid of colored squares, one per round, so friends can see how you did without seeing the answers.
Tips for better guesses
- Anchor on things you know. A liter of water weighs 1 kg. A large egg is about 50 g, an apple about 150 to 200 g, an adult human about 70 kg, a family car about 1.5 tonnes.
- Estimate both weights, then divide. If a cat is about 4.5 kg and an apple about 180 g, the answer is close to 4,500 ÷ 180, which is 25.
- Think about size and material. Two things of the same size can differ a lot: a bowling ball is far heavier than a basketball because it is solid.
- Mind the zeros. Most big misses come from being a factor of ten off. Before you lock in, ask whether the answer should have one more or one fewer digit.
Where the weights come from
Every weight in Tilt is a typical value for a standard item or a common adult animal, checked against a published source such as a sports rulebook, a zoo or a national mint. You can see all of them, with sources, on the weights page.
